Oct. 15 2002

The fishing this week was good, but the size was off just a little. We caught a lot of fish in the 1-2 pound range and not many over 6lbs. The Water temps. are still in the mid 80's and I believe that the fish are in a great transitions stage now. Last week during the new moon we where catching allot of 3 to 8 lbs fish with very few fish in the 1-2 pound range. There was a BFL super tournament Last week on the lake and they SMOKED EM... there was 6 bags over 20lbs (5fish limit) on the first day and 3 bags over 20lbs on day day two. That is some some good fishing!!
The full Moon is next week and we are also getting some cooler weather, so the water temp will cool off 5-8 degrees and the fish are going to go to really start biting !! The bigger female will really start to be more active now and the shiner fishing (live Bait) will get really good.
The spinner-bait and top-water fishing is going to be awesome, starting this week as the water temp. starts to cool off a few degrees. I will throw a 3/8 or 1/2oz. white Matzuo Spinner bait around the open holes in the grass. Concentrate on the areas the have Primarily Ell grass or thin hydrilla, the bass will spawn in this type of grass. I will also target small clumps of reeds or cat-tails on the spawning areas as the larger females love to spawn on them. Devil horse or a Pop-R (Matzuo Spit-n-Sputter) will also work well in these areas especially if you have a little wind or clouds.
So plan your trip to the Big ‘O’ as soon as you can. And please feel free to call or e-mail any time if you have any questions about fishing on Lake Okeechobee.
Bass Wishes,
Scott R. Martin
